I am so happy to be saying goodbye to December tonight. During the past month…
1. We got in a car accident. Slid in the snow and hit a tree. The insurance company totaled the car. We just got a replacement.
2. When we got in the accident, we were on our way to visit my grandmother who has been in and out of the hospital with lung problems. We tried again another weekend in December to make the 4-hour trip to see her, but we got snowed in again.
3. Two days before Christmas my husband’s business computer died. They’ve had it in the shop for a week now and it’s not looking good. Multiple viruses. And for some reason that I don’t yet understand, the automatic backup system we were using will not help us recover critical info. No final word on this yet, but, yeah, it sucks.
4. On Christmas Eve, my 18-month old nephew (left) had an allergic reaction.

My sister had to use the epi pen on him for the first time and they spent a couple hours in the emergency room. Poor little guy. All turned out fine and he was able to enjoy Christmas Day with the family.
5. My wonderful and gracious step-sister hosted Christmas this year. We had a fun, relaxing time hanging out with her and her family. But I wonder if we’ll be invited back again… Because of this:

You see, her kids, my 8 yo niece and 5 yo nephew, go to private Catholic school, believe in Santa, don’t drink soda (much), go to bed by themselves and on-time every night and are generally sweet and innocent.
My kids? Not so much. My kids are unschooled, don’t believe in Santa, know nothing about Jesus, don’t drink milk, and love their cuddle time and backrubs to get to sleep at night. Within 15 minutes of our arrival, Cassie told her cousins we didn’t believe in Santa (when I had warned her against talking about it). But they have strong beliefs and were not swayed. Soon, they were nearly convincing Cassie that Santa does exist. And then the next day Cassie told them babies are born through your vagina. I think she scarred my poor nephew.
5. We come home from our holiday visits to find water on our basement floor. The hot water heater sprung a leak and the water was spraying from a tiny hole in a pipe, up onto the sheetrock on the ceiling, and then dripping down. Luckily, it was dripping right on two hanging baskets of laundry, so they soaked up a lot of the water before it got to the floor!
December, you can suck it. Here’s to a much better January!

OK. I’m so very sorry that December was a really crappy month for you, and I wish you the best for the new year. But, I have to tell you that the picture of Cassie (with edits) and your comments regarding said picture, um, threw me into semi-hysterical laughter.
Hopefully (early) in 2010 you get a car (although the rental is pretty cool – right?). I hope your grandma gets better. Allergies scare the daylights out of us too. I am glad that he is ok. Logan and Cassie are so adorable. I love the comments about Cassie – what a trip!!! Happy 2010 to you all.
Wow, I would definitely be excited to start 2010, too. I’m glad that despite everything that happened everybody is ok! :-)

Yikes! Some scary stories there, but I have to say that this might very well be the best written blog post title I’ve seen in a long time… ;-)
