I’m a big fan of Family Fun and Wondertime magazines and I’m constantly ripping out pages with ideas I want to “save for the future.” Today I had the brilliant idea of saving these ideas on my blog! No paper to file, easier to search for and with the added benefit of being able to share the ideas with others. I’ll be posting these ideas under the “Fun Ideas” category.
This one comes from Family Fun, March 2007:
Freshly-cut flowers draw water continuously through their stems and up into their petals, where it evaporates. If you place white flowers in a colored solution of 20 drops of food coloring per 1/2 cup of warm water, you should see the petals tinted with color within 24 hours. This works best with white roses, carnations and daisies.
Sounds like a fun pre-springtime experiment, with potential to discuss lots of other biology-related topics with your child.

I remember doing this in grade school with celery! And thinking wow that is just the coolest thing ever. I bet the flowers look very pretty though – and great for little kids. :)
