I Use To Like Weather

Snow Surfing

When I was younger I used to sit on the porch with my mom and watch thunderstorms roll through. I loved heavy rain until I owned my first home and had to buy a generator to keep our sump pump going because we routinely lost power and our basement flooded.

I used to love snow. I spent my college years in Oswego, NY, where I became very familiar with the term “lake-effect snow” and never had a problem driving in it. Now I’m older. I have two children – and a collision with a tree on a snow-covered road – under my belt. Now it’s just not so fun anymore.

Ice

But it is kinda pretty.

Ice

It’s good for skiing. And the kids enjoy it.

But we now have a long, relatively steep driveway. It’s gravel and even after it’s plowed the snow gets compacted and icy. And then we get freezing rain for two days and our driveway becomes a luge track.

We spent hours out there today, hacking away at it with an axe. (Yes, an axe.) Our strategy was to expose the gravel in strategic areas so even if the car slides down, we’d get a little traction every now and then.

We haven’t been out of the house since Monday. We’re down to two rolls of toilet paper. And there’s more freezing rain coming for us on Saturday, followed by more snow on Monday or Tuesday.

At least it’s pretty.

Hey–that sounds like our house! Although my husband did bring home milk. If he takes the 4 wheel drive, I’m totally stuck at home.

Everything you write is always great! I had a steep, gravel (1/4 mile long) driveway growing up and when I was young, it was the BEST sledding driveway. When I got older and could drive, it was the WORST thing bc sometimes we’d be stranded at home (snow is fine but ice was the challenge). Now, of course, things come full circle and I love snow days at home again (as long as it’s not too many in a row, lol). Have you looked for someone to come in an sand/salt it? That’s what my dad used to do. K

I would be freaking out about the “down to two rolls of toilet paper.” That is a huge phobia of mine… running out of TP. My husband thinks it’s funny. But, when we are down to one megapack, I have to go buy two more.

Oh goodness. Hacking away with an axe does not sound very fun. :(

Winter beauty! That’s what it is, but yes, as people grow old, they remember how fun it is to play out in the snow and it feels nostalgic.

I always find show is good for one or two days then it starts becoming inconvenient as you can’t get to work or get food.

I used to like snow when I was a little boy, but now I almost hate it. Every time it snows heavily I’m late for work. My clothes get dirty. However, I still love to go to the park after it snows.
