Monday was going to be a great day. I was getting together with some friends to scrapbook for the day. But then this happened:

And suddenly my day went from great to unforgettable.
I’ve never had a surprise party before and I’m going to be 40 in a couple weeks. I dropped a few hints to my friends and my husband, but didn’t expect much. Frankly, my husband is just not detail-oriented enough to plan an entire surprise party. I thought my friends might plan a surprise girls night out or something, because I was practically begging for some sort of celebration.
But this party? If I could explain to you the full extent of the planning, the preparation, and the elaborate scheming, you would agree with me when I say that I have the best friends and family. For the past two days I have been smiling and giggling to myself as I put together all the pieces of this delightful deception.
There were about 50 of my friends and family. I was even a little scared when they all yelled “SURPRISE!”

There was Italian food (my favorite!). There was wine. And there were desserts! – pumpkin cheesecake (another favorite), Jill’s famous brownies (sinful!) and, of course, birthday cake.

There were personalized M&M’s, which made me teary-eyed.

There was even a video clip of my friend Terry dressed in spandex, wearing a David Lee Roth mask and doing roundhouse kicks to “Jump!” I’m not allowed to post that footage publicly, but I will tell you that as 40th birthday presents go, that ranks right up there for me.
Thank you to all who made the day amazingly fantastic. And a special thanks to my husband, the Leonards and the Reales, who made it all happen. I love you guys!

Happy (belated) Birthday to you! Stumbled upon your via via other’s!
Awww… great post. Believe me, the look on your face when you came up those stairs was more than worth all the hard work, planning, and stress about keeping the secret. And it was super-fun to plan this big deception; I think we may have enjoyed it as much as you did! We are just thrilled that you finally got your big surprise party. You totally deserved it! Love you too!

I have another video that J took. It’s VERY 10 year old fare, featuring a peak into the garbage can, but it gives you an idea of what we were doing before you arrived.
Love the part when you’re bummed you didn’t get to scrap. ;) And of course your tears of joy too.
