Peeling Back Emotional Layers With Onionhead

by Shannon on 11.17.09

Today’s holiday gift recommendation is perhaps not a gift you’d get for someone outside your own family, but if you’re a parent, Onionhead can teach your children about emotions and how to deal with them appropriately.

Onionhead offers tools to help kids and adults make friends with their feelings. Their goal is to help everyone learn to “name, claim, tame and aim” their feelings. We’ve been trying out the Onionhead A-Z Magnet Set for the past few weeks and it’s been an enlightening experience. A representative from Onionhead suggested I put the magnet set on my refrigerator and say nothing at all about it to my kids. I did so and within a few hours my 11 year old son was looking over the feelings and labeling them with the accompanying “I feel” and “I want to feel” magnets. We’ve since talked about a lot of the feelings on the magnet set and how to deal with them. It’s a non-confrontational way for me to know how he is feeling and for him to communicate with me.

Today I have an Onionhead Children’s Package to give away. It includes the Children’s Deck of 52 Feeling Cards: 26 positive feeling cards and their 26 opposites, along with five exercises to encourage creativity, communication, development of healthy emotional expression and problem solving skills. The Children’s A-Z Dictionary of 52 Emotions makes it simple for children to know what to do with what they feel.

These sound great. I haven’t gotten past tantrums and “I’m happy” with my son so a resource would be a great help.

I want to try this out. With three boys, not much feeling talk going on.

Sounds like a neat way to get kids into discussing their feelings…esp. difficult if you have a boy.

Boys, husband, male dog…surrounded by too much testosterone. Nobody seems to share their feelings and I just seem to keep mine inside. This book looks like a must buy!

This sounds great for my keep everything inside little girl. Even if I don’t win the drawing I am going to try and get this. I think it would really help her.

Stopping by from SITS. Wow, what an incredible wealth of articles and resources. The message of your blog really spoke to me. This Onionhead series sounds like just what the doctor ordered for my eight year old daughter who is a happy and passionate child, but also battles with some pretty strong negative emotions. Thank you so much!

This would be great for my grand daughter. She is 5 and there are times when she is not sure how to express her emotions sometimes which can lead to a total meltdown. She’s also been coming home from kindergarten with some questions about how other kids are acting. She’s such a caring child i know she is not sure how to help and this could show her how to deal with that. Plus this could this grandma not over react.
