Oh My, You hit that nail on the head! Thank you. You can shout till your blue in the face, that Homeschooling is better than regular school. In my school district, my 16 yr old came home from school, told me that in Science they learned absolutely nothing..I took this as a sarcastic remark. He then told me the Teacher allowed them to do what ever they wanted, while she played on Facebook. Kids in the back of the room proceeded to smoke pot, kids in the other back corner were having sexual relations..while a select few were cramming for a test, or doing homework. This is a very affluent community school! That is one of the big reasons I homeschool, let alone I control the education they get, instead of liberal garbage the state wants my kids to learn. Ok..Off my soapbox. Good Job.

You go girl! Homeschooling your child is a parent's right, and children who are homeschooled have higher values and a higher degree of education.

Janice, Wow, clearly you haven't met many homeschooled children. I know more than 100 homeschooled children and maybe two or three might be considered "awkward." If I walked into any class in a public school, I'd bet I'd find about the same ratio. A child's personality has very little to do with whether or not he or she is homeschooled.

Wow,
Clearly most of the people responding to this blog need more education. As far as homeschooling goes, I believe it is a personal choice. I, myself and against it because I have never met a child that went through homeschooling and wasn't awkward. It's not the schools that make your child socially unacceptable, and the whole point of public school isn't so someone else can teach your child everything he/she needs to know. You are still responsible in teaching your child when they are at home. If your child is struggling it's not just the school's fault, it's yours as well as your child's. Research where the best schools are and have them attend the best if you are really worried about schooling. Not only will they be better prepared in life but if you think they are going to get to college and have a bunch of professors that are actually going to care at all who they are or what their grade is then you are again sadly mistaken. I got lucky only having a few DECENT professors and they were only decent, never did any of my professors really care about anything that went on around them other than their research. In order to be successful in today's society it takes an immense amount of education by the state otherwise the government for the most part shuts you out. The only thing you will have going for you when your child hits college after homeschooling is that they will be able to handle more of the educational stresses given that you pushed them hard enough. However the social stresses of college life are far worse now than they use to be and they are continuously getting worse.
May you all have the best of luck regardless of your choice,

I understand some of the concerns about homeschooling. It is not a decision to be taken lightly, but I also know the benefits out way any negatives I have heard mentioned. My child went to public school for 7 years; he is still socially awkward as I believe someone put it. Public school did nothing but make him shy and insecure. His grades were poor and he didn't do well. I brought him home and homeschooled him. He seems to be doing better. Homeschooled my daughter for the first 4 years she wanted to go to public school so I let her. She does well but I have noticed in our area at least if you are not what they call a "GATE" or gifted student you are overlooked and can slip though the cracks. My daughter learned important skills in homeschool that have helped her in public. She learned how to read by phonics and how that helped her spelling as well, she learned to work independently and to search for the answers she didn't know. She learned to write well, and I think one of the greatest advantages is we have a great relationship.
As far as not being about to teach your kids there are resources out there to help on subjects you may be weak or, but come on have some faith in yourselves most of you are talking about starting to homeschool kindergarten. You are not an idiot. Yu can read and count and I am sure you know your shapes and colors. Each year builds on the last. You can do this.

Mix that attitude with some good old evolutionary philosophy and you've got yourself another holocaust or worse.
We are homeschooling.

Unbelievable! My children are my responsibility, NOT the state's or the people's responsibility!! Nothing like a little "welfare state" liberal blathering to get me all fired up! LOL Thanks for sharing the article.:D

I have been homeschooling my teenager since middle school. My wife and I decided that the "public schools" had done enough damage.

For those that read this and have fears, erase everything you will hear, everything you were spoon fed, just everything. Now, teach your child the way that is best for them - at the pace that is best for them - with interests geared for them.

Excellent article - I live in a place where they just took away our rights to let our kids learn our second official language in early years, and have additionally made it MANDATORY for them to be immersed in that language in grade 5 (imagine learning math, science, social studies, etc in grade 5 immersed in a new language. Insane!) My son's entering kindergarten this September, and that year will be it for him in public schools.
